Tick Borne Virus - Another Virus In The Horizon!
Just when people’s patience is reaching the boiling point, news of another virus is emerging. This time too it’s China. A new virus, known as Tick-borne virus has caused 7 deaths and resulted in 60 infections in China. Let's dig deeper and find out more about this Tick-borne virus.
What Is Tick Borne Virus
First of all, what are ticks. Ticks are spider-like insects that fall under the category of arachnids. They remain in hibernation during winter and come out in summer. You can find ticks across Europe, Russia and China. These ticks suck the blood of animals like rodents, pigs etc. But they can also bite human beings.
When a human being gets bitten by a tick, the virus gets transmitted to the body of humans. This Tick Borne virus causes encephalitis or meningitis, hemorrhagic fever, Lyme Disease etc.
Tick Borne Virus Details -
As the Express reports, the Tick Borne virus infection is spreading at an alarming speed in East China. The infection caused by the Tick Borne virus has been named as STFS - Severe fever with Thrombocytopenia syndrome. Thrombocytopenia means low levels of platelets in the blood. General symptoms like fever, coughing, headache, fatigue will be seen after a person gets infected with Tick Borne virus.
Why Is Tick Borne Virus A Concern
As the name suggests, Tick Borne virus is spread by ticks or tick bites to be precise. But once a human being gets STFS, the infection is feared to be spread through human to human contact. So no longer ticks are needed to spread the disease to human beings. Just like Coronavirus.
Ticks are found mainly in forests or grasslands. So people in the urban areas are less likely to be infected with Tick borne virus. However, if human to human transmission starts to happen at a faster speed, the scenario can change for the worse. According to this paper, Tick Borne virus can result in encephalitis, Kyasanur Forest Disease, Crimean–Congo hemorrhagic fever, and Rocky Mountain.
Novel Bunyavirus Infection
The new case of Tick Borne diseases are spread by the virus that is similar to novel Bunyavirus. The disease caused by this Bunyavirus category is known as Fever, Thrombocytopenia and Leukopenia Syndrome (FTLS). It is also known as STFS. The Henan province first saw the emergence of this category of virus in 2007. And then it emerged again in 2008 and 2010. This Bunyavirus category of virus is what is making scientists worry. The fatality rate can be as high as 30%.
One of the major disease in China that is caused by Tick Borne virus is Lyme Borreliosis. If one gets bitten by a tick and he get this disease he will see a red rash that keeps on getting bigger. However, this is not a scary disease and medical treatment can easily cure the disease.
Tick Borne Encephalitis
Another disease caused by Tick borne virus is Tick borne encephalitis. It will cause fever, headache nausea, vomiting etc. Severe cases of Tick Borne encephaliti can be fatal to human beings.
The silver lining is, there is a vaccine for the virus. Furthermore ticks get inactive during winter. It is unlikely that Tick Borne virus can take as ugly a shape as the Coronavirus.
